The Hindu celebration of Matsya Jayanti commends the birth commemoration of Lord Matsya, who is accepted to be the main symbol of Lord Vishnu as Fish, amid the Satya Yuga. As indicated by the Hindu folklore, the ‘Matsya Avatar’ is a one-horned fish that showed up amid the ‘Mahapralay’. In the Hindu date-book, Matsya Jayanti is seen on the ‘Tritiya’ (third day) amid the ‘Shukla Paksha’ (the brilliant fortnight of the moon) in the long stretch of ‘Chaitra’. This festival falls between the promising ‘Chaitra Navratri’ (the 9-day time frame assigned for Goddess Durga) and matches with the terrific ‘Gangaur celebrations. Matsya Jayanti is an imperative day for Hindu fans. On this day, extraordinary courses of action and pujas are performed in Lord Vishnu sanctuaries everywhere throughout the nation. The ‘Nagalapuram Veda Narayana Swamy Temple’, near Tirupati, in the territory of Andhra Pradesh, is the main sanctuary in India that is devoted to Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festivals here are exceptionally stupendous and extraordinary projects are sorted out for the day.
Rituals during Matsya Jayanti:
On this day, devotees keep a fast to please Lord Vishnu. The vrat on Matsya Jayanti commences from the previous night and the observer of this fast refrains from eating or even drinking a sip of water. The fast continues till the sunrise of the following day and devotees break their fast only after worshipping Lord Vishnu. On the day of Matsya Jayanti, it is believed to be rewarding to stay awake all night and chant Vedic mantras. Reciting the ‘Matsya Purana’ and ‘Vishnu Sahasranaam’ is also very auspicious. Offering donations or charity on the day of Matsya Purana is highly beneficial. On this day, one must donate food, clothes or money to Brahmins and also distributed among the poor and needy.
Importance of Matsya Jayanti:
As per the Hindu legends, Matsya Avatar became the primary of the ten incarnations ‘Dashavatar’ of Sri Hari Vishnu. Matsya represented one horned fish, and in this avatar, Lord Vishnu warned King Manu about the cosmic deluge and even saved the universe from the demon named ‘Damanaka’. Inside the non-secular records of Hinduism, there may be no mention regarding the rituals, traditions and customs to be accompanied in worshipping the Matsya Avatar. But on the day of Matsya Jayanti, Hindu devotees worship this shape of Vishnu with immense devotion and willpower. The festival is celebrated grandly in Lord Vishnu temples all across the country. The celebrations in the Vaishnava and ISKCON temples are very elaborate.
