Poorna Kumbha Mela
There is a puranic story of churning milky ocean for Amrutam or elixir of life which was explained in Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana and Mahabharata. Mountain Mandara as the churning rod and great snake Vasuki as the churning rope the ocean milk was churned to get drink of immorality or Amrita.
A huge pot containing Amrita emerged out of that churning. Both gods and demons created a ruckus to own the pot of Amruta. During this agitation the amrita spilled out of that Kumbham or pot. The spilled Amrita fell on the earth at four places namely Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik and Prayaga. Drops of Amrita mixed up with the rivers flowing in those regions. So those rivers become energised during particular planetary combinations. That is the time when Kumbh Mela is held.
When Sun is in Aries and Mars is in Leo, the river Kshipra attains divine energies and Kumbh Mela is held. That is why this is called Simhastha Kumbh Mela. All the sins of those who take holy bath in this river at the time of Kumbh Mela will vanish due to the touch of those divine energies.
